To Tip or not to Tip

Did you know that the word “TIP” is disappearing from many restaurant receipts?

It is being replaced by the words “Service Charge”. So what, you ask.

Well, under the law, no restaurateur can touch the tips earned by wait staff; it belongs to the wait staff.

This is not the case with the amount you write in after the words “service charge”. In this case the restaurant can decide to keep the money for a week, a month, or even determine that the amount of the “tip” was too large, and only give the employee a portion of that “service charge”.

Whenever I see the words “service charge” I will leave a cash tip. I doubt they will try to pry the money out of the waiter’ or waitress’ hands.
